After taking part in the Junge Liberale’s (JuLis) support during the election weekend in Berlin, its delegation to support D66 during the decisive week before the Dutch elections and the weekend in Saarbrücken with the FDP, my first campaigning in my local area began. My personal incentive: compensating the shortcomings during the last local and EU elections, and those of the former party local chairman.
No matter if placarding in my municipality, leafleting or visiting events with state-wide JuLis support -full throttle was the credo. A JuLi of another local chapter in my county reported about placarding 9h till 3 AM for her music club, which gave me a good benchmark right from the beginning. Thus we transformed avenues into Christian Lindner Streets, put posters calling for more cops in front of police stations & headquarters of the socialist party, those calling for more opportunities at the Greens, those calling for digitalization at schools led by Social Democrat & and those calling for more enterprise around the municipal administration, which, allegedly, is filled controlled by reds all the way down to the janitor. Thanks to the political marketing monopoly and fitting merchandise, we even managed to reach 14.6% in high-rise areas. When I heard 22.7% from a polling station based in a church, I couldn’t help wondering whether I had mixed something in their ground water. Having Lindner, the general secretary of my state’s chapter of the FDP, and a Member of European Parliament in my county must have had its effects too, as we are not exactly the epicentre of liberalism.
We also had plenty of direct feedback. Ranging from “I won’t remember it tomorrow but I just joined the party!“ to “Useless FDP! Is that necessary right in front of my house?! It’ll be gone tomorrow, and I’ll make a formal complaint!“. The latter was thanked for his comment by us placing a placard so high that he couldn’t detach it -with the face on it smiling into his kitchen. As consequence of that and the lack of parking space, I became acquainted with the spooky silence of my town in the early morning. Only to correct the backslapping of my friends that afternoon, as I had only been losing sleep doing things for the party, which of course wasn’t what they were expecting.
During a meeting of our local party’s steering committee, we were told that we broke no less than four of the agreed restrictions on hanging posters, which of course did not go down well with the attendees, and which landed us with a warning for the upcoming federal elections. At the local chapter’s monthly drinks night, the focal point was the planning of the next campaign: As we cannot impress with a powerful local faction or by the number of members in the area, the of idea of inviting party friends from outside the area to help with campaigning came up. I’ve been happy to receive confirmations from chairmen of local chapters, FDP board members and members of the state parliament. Further, when it comes to the media, we act resigned, with arguments like “We are liberal, they aren’t so they won’t write about us.“. Cross Media, guerrilla marketing or old school – the elections are the reasons to strike till the end. From the moment you believe in something – especially in tough times – you have to act like the Beastie Boys said: “You gotta fight!“

Düsseldorf oder Berlin -Hauptsache Italien!
Nach der JuLis-Unterstützung am Wahlwochenende in Berlin, der JuLis-Delegation in der entscheidenden Woche in den Niederlanden und dem Wochenende in Saarbrücken mit der FDP ging für mich der erste heimische Wahlkampf los.
Mein persönlicher Ansporn waren die Versäumnisse während der Kommunal- & EU-Wahl sowie vom ehemaligen Parteiortsvorsitzenden wettzumachen.
Ob kreisweites Plakatieren, Stecken oder mit landesweiter JuLis-Unterstützung Veranstaltungen besuchen -Vollgas stand an. Eine JuLi eines anderen Ortsbandes meines Kreises berichtete anfangs von 9 Stunden bis 3 Uhr morgens Schilderaufhängen für ihren Musikverein, was mir gleich den Maßstab setzte. So verwandelten wir manch eine Allee zur Christian-Lindner-Straße, hängten demonstrativ vor Zentralen -„Polizisten“ bei der Linken, „Chancen“ vor den Grünen, „Digitalisierung“ vor SPD-geführten Schulen & „Unternehmen“ bei der Kreisverwaltung, die angeblich bis zum Hausmeister rot ist- und konnten dank politischer Werbemonopolstellung sowie passendem Merchandise sogar in Hochhaussiedlungen 14,6% holen. Als ich 22,7% von einem kirchlichen Wahlbüro las, kam ich nicht um die Überlegung herum, ob ich dort etwas ins Grundwasser gemischt hatte. Dass Herr Lindner in meinem Kaff, Johannes Vogel und Herr Theurer im Kreis auftraten, wird ebenfalls seine Wirkung gehabt haben, zumal wir nicht gerade das Epizentrum des Liberalismus sind.
Auch direkte Rückmeldung gab es nicht zu knapp, von „Ich werde mich morgen zwar nicht daran erinnern können, aber ich bin euch gerade beigetreten!“ (Anmerkung der Redaktion: Neumitglied war angeheiterter Teilnehmer der 1. Mai-Wanderung am Cappenberger See bei meinem JuLis-Bezirksvorsitzenden in Lünen) bis „Scheiß FDP! Muss das vor meinem Haus sein?! Morgen ist das weg. Das gibt ‘ne Beschwerde!“. Letzterer Wutbürger bekam als Dankeschön noch ein Plakat so hoch, dass er es nicht abmachen konnte -dieses so gedreht, dass es ihm in die Küche reinlächelte. Als Konsequenz daraus und dem Parkplatzmangel, lernte ich die geradezu gespenstische Ruhe meiner Heimat während der Morgenstunden kennen. Um mittags das Schulterklopfen von Kollegen zu korrigieren, da ich -anders als von ihnen angenommen- die ganze Nacht lediglich parteilich aktiv war.
Während des Kreishauptausschusses mussten wir feststellen, dass nicht weniger als 4 vereinbarte Faktoren der Plakate nicht eingehalten wurden, was der Stimmung bei allen Versammelten einen Dämpfer verpasste und Warnung für die Bundestagswahl ist. Beim neueingeführten Ortsstammtisch der Partei war die Planung des nächsten Wahlkampfes ein Schwerpunkt: Da wir weder in der Fraktion, noch bei den Mitgliedern zahlenmäßig auftrumpfen können, kam die Idee auf, externe Bekannte einzuladen. So freu ich mich, dass Verbandsvorsitzende, Parteivorstände und Mitglieder des Landtages bereits zugesagt haben. Auch sollten wir bezüglich Berichterstattung nicht die Hände in den Schoß legen mit Begründungen à la „Wir sind liberal, die nicht, also schreiben die nicht über uns.“. Sei es Cross Media, Guerilla oder Old School -der 24. September 2017 ist für uns der ultimative Grund, in die Vollen zu gehen. Solange man eine Überzeugung vertritt, muss man es, wenn es hart auf hart kommt, mit den Beastie Boys halten: „You gotta fight!“
