Europe and South America – building bridges and bridging gaps

There has been a lot of talk about the cultural differences that exist between the countries belonging to Western Europe and Central Europe. But what about the differences in the cultures of two different continents? Living in a world where we are constantly trying to fit in and show belonging on different grounds, differences should be our treasure, not our divisions.

Europe and South America share historical, cultural and economic ties that have shaped their relationship for centuries. The vast distances are there to separate them, but both regions tend to recognise the importance of collaboration and cooperation in an interconnected world. By addressing the common challenges and fostering mutual growth, these two continents show that building bridges and bridging gaps can be done in the name of a more prosperous future.

The historical ties, especially between the countries from the Iberian Peninsula and South America date back to the age of exploration when European explorers reached the shores of the continent. The established Spanish and Portuguese colonies brought their cultures, languages and traditions and the two languages that are widely spoken today by South Americans, as a testament of an enduring heritage.

When it comes to trade and economic relations, it has to be said that the European Union (EU), as an example, is one of South America’s largest trading partners. On the other side, it is the South American countries that provide Europe with valuable natural resources and agricultural products. Thus, the efforts for enhanced cooperation in this sphere, but also in general, involve the active work towards further deepening of the relationship. Back in 2019, the EU and the South American regional bloc Mercosur, comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, reached a historic trade agreement after more than whole two decades of negotiations. Aiming to reduce the existing trade barriers by boosting investments, it leads to enhanced political dialogue between the two regions as well.

In that sense, the political and cultural exchange was also increased and plays a crucial role in strengthening the Europe-South America bonds. Dedicated platforms such as the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Foundation are established to promote dialogue, cooperation and cultural exchanges between European countries and those of South America and the Caribbean.

The process of addressing common issues between the two distanced continents involves facing mutual and similar challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, migration and social inequality. Seeing the need for joint efforts, both regions are increasing cooperation in the mentioned areas. They are collaborating on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, while sharing best practices and technologies at the same time. Efforts to address migration issues involve dialogue and coordination, within the scope of promoting safe and orderly migration channels and ensuring respect for human rights.

The remaining areas for cooperation involve the opportunities that the relationship between Europe and South America hold in various fields. Joint research projects, educational exchanges and innovation partnerships drive scientific and technological advancements. Collaboration in renewable energy, infrastructure development and smart cities can lead to sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for citizens in both regions.

To conclude, building bridges and bridging gaps between Europe and South America is a dynamic process that requires continued commitment and collaboration. By recognizing our shared history, strengthening economic ties, and addressing common challenges together, both regions can foster a deeper understanding and cooperation that benefits their societies, economies, and future generations. With sustained efforts, Europe and South America can build a solid foundation for a prosperous and interconnected relationship in the years to come. We have more in common than we think at first and the ambitious and bright young minds on both sides are a pure proof of that.
